Who knows best? The case for basic income

Fresh from the North American Basic Income Guarantee (NABIG) conference held in Hamilton at the end of May, I have been thinking about the stories I heard from people who benefited from a basic income.

What jumped out was how the money made a difference, and the stories confirmed for me that people know what is best for themselves and their families.

For Tim Button, a basic income has meant options.

The former security guard can now make choices — to buy healthier food, to pay to take transit, to meet a friend for coffee — since he enrolled in a provincial pilot project last October.

In the past, the 58-year-old, who lives in a rented room, said he would sometimes walk 20 blocks to eat one meal a day at a shelter.

The 16th annual North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress will be held in New York in June. Details are as follows:

  • Deadline for proposals has now passed.
  • A draft program and registration information is coming soon.

 The North American Basic Income Congress will be held at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College at 

2180 Third Ave. New York, NY 10035

Date: June 16-18, 2017,

With a special event June 15, 6 p.m., at Roosevelt House, 47-49 East 65th St.

Basic Income congress a chance to turn ‘good idea’ into reality, says key organizer

One of the key organizers for the upcoming North American Basic Income Guarantee (NABIG) Congress, says it’s time to go from discussing a “good idea” to figuring out how to make it a reality.

Dr. James Mulvale, Dean of the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba and a basic income scholar and advocate, says conference participants intend to go beyond discussing Basic Income as a somewhat vague understanding “to mapping out how to make it a reality through cooperation among various levels of governments and civil society organizations.”
